Rejoice! Or…Beware! The Gender Fairy is loose and has found their way back to York!

On September 11th, The Wheel of Nouns is collaborating with Queer Affaire and Little j to deliver an unforgettable night of queer art stalls, cabaret-theatre, and community!

From 7:00-8:00PM come browse art stalls with work by local queer artists, and take a second to relax and socialise with old friends and new.

Then at 8:00 PM sit back and enjoy Hook's 70-minute cabaret comedy The Wheel of Nouns

In The Wheel of Nouns, The Gender Fairy uses jokes, a game show wheel, and audience participation* to explore the questions "What is gender anyway?" and "What will it take for just one fairy to turn everyone in the world trans?”

The Wheel of Nouns is a queer, cabaret comedy that plays with the flexibility of the language we use to define ourselves, and invites people to revel in their right to choose who they are!

*All audience interaction will be voluntary!

Content Warnings
Swearing, occasional loud music and noises, and mentions of transphobia.

Age guidance 16+

Dress Code
Dress up as your favourite gender! Which truly can mean...whatever you want it to mean, including wearing just whatever feels comfortable!

Accessibility Information

*Note this event was originally going to be BSL interpreted but due to unavoidable life circumstances the BSL interpreter will no longer be able to attend the event.

  • This is a dry event.
Entering / navigating the space:
The main entrance to the event has a few small steps to get in. There is also street level access from the Micklegate entrance, but with an internal step encountered before reaching the main area of the event. A wheelchair ramp is available to use for that internal step.
There is a narrow hallway to get through if you are entering from the Micklegate entrance. The narrowest point measures at a width of 70cm/700mm. This makes this entrance accessible to some wheelchairs, but would prove a barrier for any wider devices.
All of the event activities will take place on the ground floor of the venue.
Depending on how the crowd is during the hour before the show, the space will likely be loud and busy. You are welcome to use ear defenders and stim toys, and to come and go if you need to during the event and the show.
Bathrooms:
The bathrooms are all single stall, gender neutral.
There is an accessible bathroom, but note that a ramp is required to get from the vent space into the bathroom hallway. Also, because of the way the bathroom doors open, and the relatively narrow hallway, some aid might be required navigating the door. If you need more specific information about the accessible bathroom email hookpresents@gmail.com
